How are you? How is summer going? How is your writing going? What’s on your to-do list?

I’m doing well, and my summer is going well. My writing? Well, it’s going. You know how that is. And my to-do list? I’ve been busy knocking things out, and I’m excited to share with you some new things at LELA House.

Dissertation Deliverance, Strategic Semester, and SDJ are my newest offerings for Black women in higher education.

Dissertation Deliverance

Dissertation Deliverance is 1:1 weekly accountability coaching for ABD students who need support and encouragement to use your time and writing and resources in ways that advance you through your program. ABD is a very isolating time when it is easy to wander aimlessly.

Strategic Semester

Sistahs on the Doctoral Journey (SDJ)

Sistahs on the Doctoral Journey (SDJ) is a community for Black women in higher education (from ABD through your entire career) where we connect with other women who understand our particular pressures, celebrate our joys, and understand our careers as part of a larger legacy that began with our 19th Century ancestral aunties and continues through the work we leave behind. It’s a monthly membership that includes the following: a weekly reading from a 19th Century author with an asynchronous discussion centered on what we can learn from the past and apply to our present; monthly live meet-ups; 1:1 matching between members to build personal relationships; pillar discussions that align with different stages of our careers; writing and career resources.

If you are looking for ongoing community and support, understanding yourself as part of an ongoing legacy that extends beyond yourself, networking and mentorship with other Black women on the doctoral journey, and resources and mindsets to apply to their daily encounters, then SDJ is for you. Three Ways to Work with Dr. Roshaunda

I’ve got big news!

I am an Author Accelerator certified book coach!

So what does that mean? Let me tell you.

Author Accelerator is a year-long (approximately) course that trains people to become book coaches. Per the Author Accelerator website, a book coach is an editor, a mentor, and a cheerleader; a sounding board for creative ideas; a committed partner; an independent expert; an entrepreneur; a human.

That last one–human–is very important in today’s world of AI. I’m not an AI detractor. I think it can be a great tool, but AI cannot write or read like humans do. AI cannot respond to a writer or their manuscript with expertise and compassion, with creativity and insight, with grace and accountability, with passion and love.

And that’s what I do as a book coach: respond to you and your writing with expertise, compassion, creativity, insight, grace, accountability, passion, and love.

So how is that different from what I’ve been doing? Let me tell you.

It’s not so much different from what I’ve been doing as a coach for Black women in higher education as it is a beautiful expansion of the coaching I do for Black women in higher education.

To my decades of experience in supporting academic writers, I’m adding dozens of practicum hours in fiction coaching: including how to move from idea to outline, from outline to draft, from daft to manuscript, and from manuscript to pitch package. And friends, these lessons do not only apply to fiction; they apply to academic writing as well.

Not only can I now support you in your fiction writing, I can also help you bring the possibilities inherent in fiction into your academic writing. You want to work on the narrative arc of your nonfiction? I’ve got you. You want to narrate your nonfiction through the lens of a protagonist? I’ve got you.You want to frame your nonfiction in such a way that one scene causes the next? I’ve got you.

My new certification as a fiction book coach enhances my ability to support Black women in higher education in all the ways. In other words, I’ve got you.

So, my beautiful Black sistahs in higher education, there are three ways to work with me: SDJ, Dissertation Deliverance, and Strategic Semester. And you don’t have to choose just one. I recommend SDJ for everyone and then add Dissertation Deliverance or Strategic Semester, depending on what kind of writing you’re doing. Of the three options, choose one or two to best support your current needs and your future aspirations.

SDJ (Sistahs on the Doctoral Journey) is a community of Black women in academia (from ABD through senior leaders), who support, celebrate, encourage, connect, and build together.

Dissertation Deliverance: Weekly Accountability Coaching is private, personalized 1:1 coaching to help you navigate your doctoral journey once you’ve completed your coursework. You may be doing self-directed work, but you don’t have to work in a silo.

Strategic Semester: From Idea to First 100 Pages in 16 Weeks is a 16-week cohort for Black women in higher education. You will go from being unsure of how to start your book project (fiction or nonfiction) and struggling to create a writing habit to having dedicated writing time, a blueprint for your book, and your first 100 pages.

So what should you do right now, now that you know all of these wonderful things about my business and book and writing coaching?

What’s New at LELA House
Hello!

How are you?

I’m doing well. Really well, actually. That’s part of why it’s been a while since we’ve talked, so I wanted to update you on my recent career moves.

As you know, I’ve spent years working with academic writers, and I have been coaching academic writers through my business LELA House for about 5 years now. I plan to continue coaching academic writers, but I am also going to transition to book coaching.

I’m currently enrolled in a book coach certification program through Author Accelerator, where I am learning to work with people on full book projects. I am a self-proclaimed cultural custodian for black women (it took me a long time to realize that my entire life trajectory has been pointing toward this, but that’s a different story for another day :-). So through LELA House, I seek to maintain, protect, and advance the culture of black women, focusing on our LELA (Life, Education, Literature, and Art). I offer writing coaching, executive life coaching, and self-care services. For the crux of my work, however, I support women whose writing includes black women and our concerns (especially, but not exclusively, from the long US 19th Century). I’m looking forward to working with writers who depict historical African American women, particularly women from the long US 19th Century. I’m excited about this shift, as it helps me dive deeper into 19th C US literature (particularly literature by and about black people), which was the focus of my doctoral studies, and more importantly, it gives me a new way to serve writers.

As I move through my book coach training, I will focus on working with writers to meet the specific requirements of my practicums. To that end, I will need to scale back my work with academic writers.

Before I scale back, however, I am offering a Summer Editing Special for academic writers. I will edit 5,000 – 10,000 words for a flat fee of $499. My goal is to help academic writers complete their writing before the end of summer. My editing will include in-line edits, comments, and citation review. As I move through my book coach certification, I will still serve a limited number of academic writers as clients. I will also look for writers who would like support as they include historical African American women in their writing. If you know any writers who need either of these kinds of support, I would appreciate an introduction. And if you are interested in writing support yourself, I’d be delighted to talk with you about it.

Speaking of writing support, I’m working on two new offerings.

The first one is Leadership Legacy, which is an 8-week writing workshop for African American coaches of all kinds (life, leadership, career, book, etc.). In the workshop you will explore which African American leaders have influenced your leadership and how you would like to leave a legacy through your leadership. You will write an essay (or a poem, or a dramatic reading, or a TED-type talk, or whatever works best for you) over the course of the workshop that you can use as a blog post, post on LinkedIn, introductory video, or however your creativity blossoms. The workshop will be a great place to connect with other coaches and thought leaders, and you can use it to jump start your journey on that leadership book or memoir that you’ve been thinking about writing but never knew how to get started on.

The next one is S.O.S – Sisters Offer Solidarity. S.O.S is a 12-week solidarity circle that offers support to women working on their dissertations. We will work on cultivating the mindsets that will see you through the process, set goals, check in on progress, encourage one another, and dedicate time to writing. The solidarity circle will be a great place to connect with other writers in the throes of dissertating, and you can use it to help you reach your goal of finishing your dissertation.

Now, let’s keep each other accountable, because I’ve said I’ll do some things and I’ve asked you to do some things.
